How to Start A Productive Family Garden

Check out this list of the best Amazon items to start a family garden on your porch!

Are you interested in growing your own vegetable garden to:

  • Save money on groceries?
  • Be more self-sufficient?
  • Cut down on pesticides and go organic?

You CAN EASILY do it! EVEN if:

  • You don’t have a dedicated garden space in your yard
  • You live in an apartment or townhouse and only have a balcony or patio
  • You don’t have much time to invest in gardening

Last year I GREW 300+ TOMATOES ON MY BACK PORCH with just 4 tomato plants, and 5 helpful items from Amazon, and truly minimal effort.

You REALLY can do it to!

Below I will describe EXACTLY what you need to replicate this and what I did to grow 300+ tomatoes on my back porch!

Items you will need (5 from Amazon!) to start your family garden:

1. Raised bed grow box: These raised bed boxes from the EMSCO group are perfect!  These are exactly what I used to generate my harvest of 300+ tomatoes on my back porch.  I suggest buying two containers and putting 2 plants per container.  They feature a water reservoir with a self-watering system and overflow holes to prevent over-watering and are very low maintenance!

Note: To complete assembly of these raised beds you will need 1.5 cubic feet of potting mix and dolomite.

2. Fertilizer: This Miracle-Gro Tomato Plant Food is a must-have for your garden to produce more abundant plants and bigger tomatoes.

3. Pruning Shears: You will definitely want to prune and stake up your tomato plants to maintain their highest productivity. These pruning shears are very sharp and made of high carbon steel, and are a perfect addition to your garden tools.

4. Garden Twine: I love using garden twine to tie up my tomato plants to our porch railing to give them support as they grow. It can be very beautiful too as the vines grow across your porch. This is truly an invaluable garden tool.

5. Plant Cages: These plant cages are absolutely great! They are 6 feet tall, easy to assemble, very sturdy, and they are adjustable which is helpful for vine-based plants.

You will also need:

Tomato/vegetable plants: You can pick up tomato/vegetable plants at your local home improvement store, or check out the Burpee catalog to order interesting varieties.  I suggest getting 4 plants.

How to set up your family garden:

1 .The first thing to know about setting up your family garden is WHEN to plant your garden. You can easily determine this by going to the the following website and entering in your zip code. Your growing zone and average date of last frost will appear to guide the timing of when you should plant.

2. Once the last frost is over, you can plant! Assemble your raised bed planters and plant your vegetables.

3. Add water to the raised bed planters once per day in the morning via the watering tube, and add fertilizer to the water once per week to stimulate growth and productivity.

4. Use the garden twine to tie the tomatoes/vegetables to the plant cages on a weekly basis, so the vines do not get heavy and break from the weight of your produce.

5. Prune any dead or diseased leaves off of the plant, and prune any “suckers” [new growth between established branches].

Using these products and these techniques, I was able to grow 300 tomatoes from 4 plants on my back porch last summer!

Have fun gardening!

Happy planting! Happy harvesting!
